What is the Fieldmarks app?

All about how Fieldmarks makes for an unforgettable trip

The Fieldmarks app is a wildlife companion customized to your specific expedition. Your operator sets it up with your itinerary and the species you might see, and you get in by entering a short code. There's no account to create and nothing for you to pay.

What you can do with it

  • Follow your itinerary — day by day, with today highlighted, plus your guide's photo and bio.

  • Look up wildlife — a field guide covering the species in the regions you're visiting, with photos, common and scientific names, rarity, conservation status, diet, habitat and the best times to see them.

  • Log what you see — a few taps to record a species, how many, and what they were doing.

  • See what your group saw — everyone in your party shares one sightings list, viewable on a map or as a list. Even if you don't log your own sightings, your guide may on your behalf.

  • Read your daily recap — a Field Report from your guide summarizing the day, and a full Expedition Chronicle at the end of the trip.

Traveling on a group day tour instead of a multi-day expedition?

These work a little differently — learn more about Tours.

It works without signal

Once your trip has loaded, the field guide, itinerary and maps live on your phone. You can browse them and log sightings with no bars at all. Anything you log uploads by itself the next time you're back online, so you never have to think about it.

What it isn't

  • There's no sign-up, password or profile to maintain, but you must be invited by your tour operator.

  • It's free for you. Your operator provides it as part of your trip.

  • It isn't a social network. What you log is shared with your own party and your operator's team, and with nobody else.

What it asks for

The app asks for two permissions, and only at the moment they become relevant:

  • Notifications, so you know when your guide publishes the day's Field Report. That's about one notification per day, plus your recap at the end of the trip. It never pings you about individual sightings.

  • Your location, so a sighting can be pinned where you saw it. Your location is only read at the moment you log something, never in the background.

You can decline both and still use everything else. The app only asks once, so if you say no and later change your mind, turn them back on in your phone's own settings for the app.
