Logging what you see

How to record and share sightings and your Most Wanted list

Logging a sighting takes a few taps and works with no signal at all. What you log is shared with the rest of your party and visible to your guide.

Logging a sighting

First, open the Wildlife tab and locate the animal you've spotted. You can search by name or use filters to help you narrow down.

Once you have your specific animal's details open, tap the large Log Sighting button near the center of the screen to open the logging form.

What to fill in

Only the species and a count are required. Everything else is optional, so you don't need to complete the whole form while the animal is still in view. You can come back and add detail later.

  • Count — roughly how many you saw

  • Behaviors — sleeping, eating, hunting, playing, mating, grooming or migrating

  • Characteristics — juvenile, adult, male, female, pregnant, injured and so on

  • Date and time — defaults to now, and adjustable if you're writing it up afterwards

  • Notes — anything else worth recording. Your guide can read these.

Sharing the Sighting Location

The first time you open the Log Sighting screen, you'll be prompted to share your location. Sharing your location is completely optional, and is only used to record the sighting's location. Your location is never accessed in the background or stored by the app. (See our Guest Privacy Notice for more details)

If you choose not to share your location, your sighting will be logged with no location.

If you've allowed location access, the app pins the sighting where you are. You can drag the pin on the map to correct it.

No signal is normal

We know the best sightings happen where there's no cell service. Sightings save to your phone immediately. When you're offline you'll see a note saying it will sync once you're back online, and it uploads on its own when you reconnect and open the app.

You can check the current sync status from the App Settings button on the Expedition home tab.

Changing or removing a sighting

To modify a sighting your party logged, open the sighting from the Sightings tab or from the species detail page in the Wildlife Library.

From the sighting details view (fig. B below), you can click the Edit Sighting button and make any changes desired. If you wish to delete the sighting entirely, click the red trash can button in the top right of the Edit Sighting screen.

Note: You can only edit or delete sightings that you or your party logged. If a sighting was logged by your guide, only your guide can edit or remove it. You will not see an Edit Sighting button at all in this case.

If you edit a sighting that was already verified by your guide, it will lose its verification status until it's re-reviewed.

Choosing Your Most Wanted

Your party can pick up to five species you're most hoping to see, which alerts your guide to keep an eye out.

Tap the heart on any species page to add it to your Most Wanted list (fig. C below). If you already have 5 selected, you'll need to remove one before you can add another. Remove it by tapping the heart again to toggle it off.

The Most Wanted list is shared across your party, so you're all chasing the same five, and the app tracks how many you've found.

Sharing a Sighting

From any individual sighting, you can create a story card to share on social media. Just choose "Share Sighting" and select your photo of the animal.

You'll then be able to download and share your generated share card to Instagram and other social networks.
